Happy New Year to you all. Here's some new work that I've been working on. The idea is that I will make a series of boxes that will hold a glazed curiosity. The curiosity will be watched over by a bird. There will be a stalking cat like creature, ever present, trying to see/reach the curiosity. I am thinking of appropriate names for the cat and bird.

I've also shown some of the influences for this work. I really like the rough texture of old pallets but prefer them to be black or charred. The slats remind me of the structure of a sauna with ambient light filtering through them.

I had a lovely day out on Saturday at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The weather was crisp, dry and bright perfect for a walk around the grounds.

One of the current exhibitions is new work by Rachel Goodyear. I think Rachel is a fantastic artist. Her pencil drawings of wildlife and lonesome people have great skill and imagination. I was interested to see that she is moving into animation and even clay. The exhibition is on until 3rd January 2012 and well worth a visit.

I also got chance to see the Jaume Plensa exhibition that I saw being installed back in April. I was impressed with the scale, skill and ideas around his work. One of the highlights was a curtain of words that tinkled delightfully in the autumn sun. Another was the deep drones from huge inscribed gongs.

I've recently visited The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. It is a great example of a quality product, history, marketing and branding coming together in an interesting visitor experience. Well worth a visit. And yes, it does taste better over there.

I liked the way this work was presented and the little birdhouses.

Old remnants and spare ceramic parts from Spode. Apparently these were put together as an installation by Neil Brownsword however I don't think this would be too hard as lots of curious objects were left in ceramic dust to be reclaimed. If you visit, take a look through some of the windows that spotlight a now defunct ceramic world - a real installation!

I will be selling my work at Salford Museum and Art Gallery's Craft Fair this Sunday. That's 16th October, 11am to 3.30pm. Corn hair

I've been growing sweetcorn again this year. In my eagerness to see if the corn was ready, I opened up an ear. Inside were many strands of golden hair, each strand came from its own kernal. Apparently, this hair is called 'silk' and the pollen from the tassels (at the top of the husk) falls onto the 'silk' which in turn pollinates it and forms corn kernels. Fascinating.

I was lucky enough to get a ticket to watch/listen to the BBC Philharmonic record in their new home at Mediacity yesterday. I've seen smaller numbers of the Phil perform out 'in the community' in Salford which was great. Now I had a chance to see all (or nearly all, there were 94!) of them in their purpose built studio. It was interesting to glimpse into their world. What a brilliant job they have! As 2pm drew near, the studio began to fill up with the orchestra. Members warmed up or chatted to friends - they could have been in any office in England! At 2pm professionalism and the love of music enshued. They performed pieces by 3 different composers Ravel, Gershwin and Montsalvatge. My favourite parts were when the kettledrums bounced into play alongwith the brass section. Fantastic. (And free!)

The above images show the lantern festival at Gogoku Shrine in Fukuoka. 6,000 lanterns are displayed at the shrine during O-bon. O-bon is an event that commemorates one's ancestors, the spirits are welcomed back to the family home. Lanterns are displayed to help the spirits to return.

We are now home and fully rested after our fantastic adventure in Japan. Every day was different and our senses bombarded. It is interesting to see how the Japanese do things and to be immersed in their mono-culture but also to come back home and see our lives afresh.

We would like to thank our friends and their families for making us feel so welcome and for showing us around their home city. Hopefully it won't be another 10 years before we return again. Domo arigato gozaimashita!

Our visit to Hiroshima coincided with the 66th anniversary of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It was a very moving time to visit the city. Many people had gathered in the peace park to pay their respects and join in the peaceful protests of hope of a nuclear free world. At 8.15 am on 6th August 2011 the peace bell rang out to signify the time the bomb dropped 66 years ago. The noisy park was struck silent as people bowed their heads in respect. Later the Mayor of Hiroshima spoke his message for peace and white doves were released. Later that evening thousands of peace lanterns with handwritten messages of peace were released to float hopefully down the river past the A Bomb Dome. As we walked through the peace park people were quietly queuing at one of the monuments to pay their respects, a Buddhist ceremony was taking place, survivors families holding a candlelit vigil. It was very powerful and something that will remain with us for the rest of our days.

What is striking about Hiroshima is the peace message that is so strongly campaigned for. The Mayor will send a letter to every country that carries out an atomic test. Asking for reconsideration and an end to such destructive activities. Local high school children canvas for signatures to stop nuclear tests and nuclear power. Hiroshima has a hope that by 2020 all nuclear weapons will be disarmed. The mayor is asking for mayors of peace from around the world to help make this possible. I hope they will succeed.

Beautiful Kyoto - part 1

We had four fantastic days in Kyoto. The city is so well preserved yet functioning on a modern level. I could take countless photographs of the beautiful houses of Gion and the many many temples of the city.

We stumbled upon the heaquarters of Ikenobo - a style of Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging). I was expecting a shop but the whole building was the offices for this type of Ikebana. The ground floor had a lovely atrium with birch trees and coloured birds of many varieties. Usually I don`t like to see caged birds but they had such space and sympathetic surroundings it seemed like a great home for them. There was also a carp pond and in the courtyard was a shrine, Rokkakudo, which was where Ikebana began!

We had some fun in Gion. We had to pose for a group of Japanese amateur photographers as they shot us looking curiously into some of the old homes. This area is where the geishas work and it is unusual to see them out in the day. However, we must have hit upon the right time and saw about 8 in total! They looked immaculate in full kimono and make-up on such a hot and humid day.

Family Inn Saiko

Here we are in Japan! What a mad three days we`ve had in Tokyo. Total sensory overload. We arrived at 9.30am Tokyo time after flying all day and into the future - our journey was no way finished and we caught a train into the city which took 2 and a half hours, then two subway trains and a taxi to our accommodation. We were exhausted but it was only 3.30pm! Fortunately, the Saiko family made us feel very welcome and showed us to our Japanese style room (tatami mats, futons and space age toilet). A much needed shower then back out to negotiate the unfamiliar streets of Kanemecho. What a fascinating place, row upon row of tiny family run shops selling anything from soba noodles to tatami mats. All products made on the premises. After our meal of soba and seaweed we crawled back to our second home and crashed out at 7pm!

I can`t recommend Family Inn Saiko enough. If you are looking for a truly Japanese experience it is a must. It is the equivalent to a good British `B and B` where the hosts really make you feel at home. You can even experience Japanese bathtime. The house is immaculate, both contemporary and traditional. A great experience.

The Fuji TV Building is in the newest entertainment area in Tokyo. It is an area named Odaiba and was built at great expense on reclaimed land from the sea. Arriving by monorail you really feel like you are travelling to the future.

Japanese　Craft　Museum

This was fantastic - a celebration of craft from all corners of Japan. The above picture is their window display that shows summer in Japan with wind chimes, fans and bamboo products. Well made regional crafts are respected and sought after in Japan. It is such a shame that many British people have lost this connection to handcrafted products and wares. I bought a sake set from a pottery that lost everything during the earthquake/tsunami this March. I wonder if they will ever be able to start their business again.

Of course I had to try one of the many cat cafes in Tokyo. For an hour or more you can enjoy the company of some very pampered cats. It was such a surreal experience. I can see why people go there as it was serene and calm compared to the noise and madness that is Tokyo. I don`t think `Our Mabel` would find employment here. She is very picky as to who she lets stroke her.

Our first temple visit in Kyoto. Really beautiful and calm. The temple shown has been restored to a fantastic standard. The modern looking part on the left is a protective covering as they restore that side. It is the largest wooden structure in the world. Whole tree trunks were used as supporting columns.

I discovered Angry Kid here and as I enjoyed his naughty exploits a little Japanese boy sat down next to me, watching when I laughed then followed every laugh with his own. I think he thought I was Angry Kid! I was the only person in Fukuoka with naturally red hair. . .

Manchester International Festival

The Manchester International Festival started on Friday (1st July). There is a definite buzz about Manchester. This is the third festival and it feels more confident and established. This year we've had glorious weather and many people have been basking in the rays at the festival square (Albert Square). This area is much improved, making it a desirable place to visit. The seating areas cover all weather eventualities! The pavilion has djs and talks, you can also take a guided tour of Manchester too. Some events are free. Check out the website.

I'm looking forward to Doctor Dee this Friday. I went to see Monkey: Journey to the West during the first MIF. I was blown away by the creativity of the piece and the talent of all involved. It was magical.

Running at the same time is 'Not part of ...' festival. That aims to 'see what happens when a festival stops treating artists as a revenue stream and gives them total freedom of self-expression.' I went to their 'Sit com Trials' on Saturday. Five ten minute sit coms read by actors and the audience voted on their favourite. We got to listen to the end of the winning sit com. I was impressed with the actors animating the scripts. All the pieces were funny and well written. It was good fun.

The countdown is on . . . the big one . . . we are off to Japan!!!! at the end of July. My posts leading up to departure date will show some of the memories and memorabilia I gathered last time I was there.

O-kunchi festival, Karatsu

O-kunchi is a fantastic festival in Karatsu, Kyushu. It is an autumn festival that takes place over 3 days, usually in November. The photos above are from the third night of the festival when teams dressed in the traditional uniforms of Edo Period (1603-1868) firefighters pull huge floats through the town. It's a wondrous sight with lots of colour, activity and music. A truly Japanese experience. There was a great atmosphere in the town. I was lucky enough to stay with some local people who invite all their friends to stay for the festival. They put on a hugh banquet and lay countless futons out for people to sleep on.

Erie's Rest - Part 2

'The 'Unlocking Salford Quays' project reveals the hidden history of The Quays - from industrial hub to one of the country’s most prestigious waterside developments, home to Mediacity, The Lowry and the Imperial War Museum . Little evidence remains of the once thriving Docks, or the people who lived, worked or played here during that era. Now visitors can follow the sculpture trail to discover a multitude of memories and stories.' Unlocking Salford Quays

The images above show the former Dock 9 on the Manchester Ship Canal. This is the site of Ingrid Hu's artwork entitled 'Erie's Rest'. Many parts of the redeveloped Salford Quays are named after areas of Canada where the Manchester Liners would sail to and from, with imported and exported goods.

The artwork spans both sides of the canal basin. The shape of the sculpture echoes the ebb and flow of the Canal. The artist was inspired by stories of an ancestor who claimed to have walked on both the Canal floor during its construction, and the Canal surface when it froze to ice.

Ingrid asked me to design and make the ceramics to be inserted into the artwork. I used water as a theme. Water links the Manchester Ship Canal to the rest of the world, without it trade with different countries would not have been so vast. I chose a raindrop shape that would reflect memories and images of the past within it's bulbous form.

I designed and made some raindrops with relief detail. It was decided that due to safety and maintenance issues ceramic transfers should be used instead. The transfers show drawings of dockers at work. Their job was to unload a ship’s cargo and load it onto rail wagons lined up along the Docks. The task was heavy and demanding and took place outdoors in all weathers.

Last year, I was contacted by Ingrid Hu to design and make some ceramics. The ceramics were to be inserted in her commissioned art piece, as part of the Unlocking Salford Quays Project. I was pleased to be asked to work on her commission and given the opportunity to develop work in a different area than usual. It has certainly been challenging and a completely unusual way of working for me.

Here are some images of the finished work. In subsequent posts I will explore the design process.

Birch Room

I have made some much needed panels to go above a door in my house. Originally, the door had an old fashioned glass panel above it. I took umbridge to the lack of design and four years later came up with my own design. The theme of the room is birch, therefore, I designed and made porcelain tiles with birch decoration to be fitted into the panel. I am happy with the finished piece. It is very much in keeping with the birch theme and has the added advantage of letting less light into the room at night.

Whilst working on the tiles, I designed a tile with handrawn birch detail. I used ceramic crayon and drops of my aqua glaze. I thought this piece worked really well. It has a delicate quality to it and could be a lovely gift. I now sell these pieces as personalised porcelain pictures through my shop on 'Not on the High Street'.

Tracey Meek - will be creating a spontaneous 'secret monster pop up garden' world spread over 3 or 4 rolls of plain wall paper suspended in The Art Market window. Breaking down creatures taken from her illustrations she will recreate them in collage, wire and paints and sticky out layers, sticking and pasting and reacting as ever to her surroundings. On Friday evening, I went to see 'Mercury Rev' at the Bridgewater Hall. To my great suprise Mark Burgess' new band 'Chameleon Vox' were supporting. Mark is a great songwriter and vocalist. His new band basically are keeping the music of 'The Chameleons' alive. It really made my night seeing them in concert. During 'Mercury Rev's' set, vocalist Johnathan Donahue, spoke about how 'The Chamelons' had been a big influence on his songwriting and the reaction of 'Mercury Rev's' fans to their music was exactly like his to 'The Chameleons'. What a lovely thing to say.

'Mercury Rev' put on a very good show. They all looked like they were really enjoying playing. They had a big layered sound that showcased their songs wonderfully. I was very impressed with them. Please click on the links below to listen to the two bands.

I recommend visiting 'The John Rylands Library' on Deansgate if you are visiting Manchester. I hadn't been in since in was refurbished and a new contemporary entrance way added. The gothic architecture is a joy to walk around - be sure to check out the reading room, the original Victorian toilets in the basement and the stained class windows entitled 'Theology directing the labours of science and art'. There is an interesting exhibition entitled 'The Death and Life of Al-Mutanabbi Street'.

Full of bookshops and bookstalls, Al-Mutanabbi Street is at the centre of Baghdad’s literary and intellectual world. On March 5, 2007, a car bomb was detonated on this street, killing 38 people. This could have been any street, anywhere in the world.

The Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition was formed in response to the loss of life, and the targeted attack on a place where people gathered to exchange ideas.
The Coalition asked printers to produce a broadside in response to the event. An exhibition of these posters has toured the world, raising awareness of the attack, and is now coming to the Library as part of a joint project with the Imperial War Museum North. Jeremy Deller’s Baghdad, 5 March 2007 – the twisted wreckage of a car destroyed in the bombing, will be on display at IWMN from April 2011.

Tell us about your company and how it all began?

I studied 3D Design at Manchester Metropolitan University. Throughout the course I was always happiest in the ceramics department and this lead me to specialise in ceramics. After university, I travelled for five years and spent two years in Japan. I love Japanese arts and crafts. After, returning home I set up my studio in Salford, Lancashire. I have been in business for five years.

What do you specialize in?

I make decorative porcelain with a distinctive original aqua glaze. My current range includes bowls, cups, wall art and brooches. Most of the pieces are thrown on a potter's wheel but I also use other processes to form the work.

Signs of spring

I think spring must be my favourite season. I love it when I can see signs of growth and colour again, when daffodils stand proud and bright.

One of the areas I look forward to seeing in spring is The Crescent at Salford University with it's blossom and daffodil droves.

There are controversal works happening along The Crescent. In an attempt to make the area more pedestrian friendly and celebrate some stunning architecture and heritage, traffic calming measures are underway. As you can imagine commuters using this avenue into Manchester are not pleased. As a local resident I'm looking forward to seeing the end result.

I went up to Yorkshire Sculpture Park recently. I needed some pollution free peace and quiet. It's such a great place to visit and go for an interesting walk. I was there during change over at some of the galleries. Here are a few photos from the day wrapped in white cloud - I'm not sure if the work is finished or not. I couldn't get closer as it wasn't open yet.

If you didn't know already, the government has dropped it's cold hearted money grabbing scheme to sell off our forests. Well done to all involved in fighting the government. I'm going to recommend 38 degrees again - they have many more campaigns that you can get involved in if you so wish. It is well worth standing up and being counted.

Another recommendation, 'Catfish' a most unusual documentary that keeps you wondering after the credits have rolled. I don't want to give anything away - just watch it!

Save our forests

38 degrees is an organisation which brings you together with other people to take action on the issues that matter to you and bring about real change in the UK. They have run successful campaigns including saving 6 Music. Please follow the link to sign petitions about the issues you care about.

Many people signed the 'Save our forests' campaign and contacted their MPs to urge them to force the government to rethink it's plans.

' The government announced they will pause forest sell-offs for a few months. It's a brilliant sign, but our forests are still in danger. If we keep working together, we can save our forests forever - not just for a few months.

The government is still going full steam ahead with changing the law to clear the way for a 100% sell-off. It looks like they hope the fuss will die down if they pause a few sales here and there - so they can press on with quietly scrapping legal protection for our public woodlands.

Our petition is now 490,000 strong. Let's show the government we will keep campaigning until English forests are safe, by making sure the petition passes half a million signatures today.

Picture yourself in the last forest you visited. Remember how you felt, what you saw, how peaceful it was. Now imagine hearing that this beautiful place has been auctioned off. We just can't let it happen!

By working together, bit by bit, we are protecting our woodlands for future generations. Since 38 Degrees members voted to launch this campaign, we've spread the word, emailed our MPs, and chipped in to pay for opinion polls and adverts. Changing Rooms

I am working on a lot of different projects at the moment. However, none are ready to show to you yet. In the interim, I thought I would show you a retrospective work - my bathroom. The original bathroom (not designed by me by the way) was a gloomy dark red with partially grouted tiles. I wanted the whole bathroom tiled for ease of cleaning and sharpness in design. I chose the largest matt tiles I could find and decided that 3 vertical strips within the design would provide the colour. I made lots of different sized pebbles and glazed them in my distinctive aqua glaze. To break up the colour I inserted some white matt pebbles. Once the whole bathroom was tiled the space looked double the size. The vertical position of the tiles and pebbles really heightened the space. It's very light and airy. What do you think?

The smallest gallery in the world - part 3

Here’s my first post of 2011. I thought I’d brighten up my living room with this beautiful vase from Hagi, Japan. It looks like a warm tranquil sunset. Hagi yaki (pottery) originated in Korea and is said to be the second most revered type of tea bowls in Japan after Raku yaki. Hagi yaki is generally noted for it’s soft colours and glazing which is a secret of each kiln. I think the vase is quite unusual as it isn’t glazed and shows off the beauty of the clay. Anyway, I hope you like it and welcome back!

Check out this website ‘Derelict Places - documenting decay’. It has some wonderful images of abandoned buildings from around the world. I particularly liked the Paris Metro.

A forest awakes

I took a post Christmas walk around Rivington. It was great to breathe the fresh air heavy with rotting vegetation. Mist hung amongst the skeletal trees. The vegetation within the forest dripping steadily as the ice melted away.

I love saturated moss. It evokes a memory of a soft carpet leading to another world.

I got a great book for Christmas, 'Stickwork' by Patrick Dougherty. Patrick (with a group of helpers) makes fantastic sculptures from sapling sticks. The way he uses the sticks makes the work look like it is alive and breathing. Like Andy Goldsworthy, the pieces decompose over time and return back to the earth.

There is an interesting introduction by Jennifer Thompson which made me think about why I have used sticks in my work. I'm glad other people see their beauty too. 'There is something elemental, almost primal, in the appeal of sticks and their parents, trees; their history precedes our own, and they have been man's constant companion since the earliest days, as shelter, nourishment and fuel.' 'I would like to, if I may, offer support to Johnny Marr who has spoken out to the media this week against David Cameron. To those who have expressed concern over Johnny's words in view of the fact that David Cameron has pledged immense allegiance to the music of the Smiths, I would like to try to explain why I think Johnny is right not to be flattered.
It is true that music is a universal language – the ONLY universal language, and belongs to all, one way or another. However, with fitting grimness I must report that David Cameron hunts and shoots and kills stags – apparently for pleasure. It was not for such people that either "Meat is Murder" or "The Queen is Dead" were recorded; in fact, they were made as a reaction against such violence.
I recall some years ago a party political broadcast on behalf of the Conservative Party where David Cameron spoke directly to camera as an LP copy of "The Queen is Dead" proudly displayed itself on the wall behind his right shoulder. It is, of course, a fantastic thrill when the music you make is acknowledged by virtually anyone at all. But David Cameron is not just anyone. Some months ago, as the long-beaked amongst you might recall, I was due to appear on the Andrew Marr Show alongside David Cameron, and however much I worship the words of Andrew Marr, I could not go through with the invitation . . . click here to read the full condemnation on True to You Net.

Even funnier, the look of shock and outrage on Camilla and Charlie's faces as their bubble was slightly bruised by the real world.

Freezing temperatures

Last week, I was shocked to discover the clay pieces I had been working on had frozen! This is what frozen porcelain looks like. Urgh - not pretty at all.

Some creatures that love this weather are penguins. Check out this live webcam from Edinburgh Zoo. I like to watch this for a bit in a morning. They are so cute and funny.

Here are my own penguins investigating strange shapes in the snow. It's a 'lesser seen in cold weather Mabel' footprint!

A big thank you to all who came to support me and the mill last Thursday. The night was a great success. We were very busy and the fair had a fantastic atmosphere. My new penguin work went down a treat! I raised £11.16 for 'Animals in Distress' (10% of the price of penguin work goes to this charity). I really liked the work of Anna Wilson-Hall. Her work has a clean cut graphic quality to it. She showed a range of tree paintings in autumnal colours.

I've uploaded a few more items on Folksy too.

And made a wall feature to compliment the kitchen tiles I made recently.

These greetings cards have images taken from my ceramic 'Last of the melting snow' series.

The cards are suitable for any occasion. The image can easily be removed from the card to be displayed elsewhere or kept as a memento. The card is 203mm x 150mm and holds a photograph that is 177mm x 127mm.

Please be aware that the card is black throughout therefore a coloured pen will be needed to inscribe the inside. The inside has been left blank for your own message.

KODO!

Last night I went to see Kodo (taiko drummers from Japan) at the Bridgewater Hall. They are fantastic! If you ever get the chance to see them I recommend it. I've seen them four times now and as always I was impressed with their style, technique, imagination and stamina. Their drive and devotion to their craft is astounding and something I would like to attain with my ceramics.

'For nearly thirty years, Kodo has explored the boundless potential of the ancient Japanese drum, the taiko. Inspired by the powerful natural beauty of their home on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan, Kodo infuses traditional forms with fresh global influences to create new musical expressions that are utterly unique. Two meanings are embedded in the Japanese characters for Kodo. First, heartbeat: the primal, tender sound as heard in the womb. Second, children of the drum: reflecting Kodo's intent to play their drums simply, with the heart of a child. Since 1981, Kodo has delivered over 3,200 performances in 46 countries, becoming Japan's most acclaimed performing arts group.

Through the "One Earth Tour", Kodo will bring the sound of the drum to the ears of the world - and with the taiko's unique ability to transcend barriers of language and custom, remind us all of our membership in that larger community - the world. ' (excerpt and images taken from Kodo's website)

Autumnal food

My favourite restaurant in Manchester is 'Samsi' in Spinningfields. They have recently added some interesting items to their menu. Pictured here is their new green tea range. They are very pretty and unusual.

The 'flowering teas are hand-tied individual tea (Green Tea) leaves with selected dried aromatic flowers forming a tea ball/heart, which reveals its secret centre when placed in boiling water, blooming into an artistic and captivating flower display with an enriching taste' (excerpt from Samsi's drinks menu).

Pom poms and baskets

My sister bought this 'pom pom' plant (I don't know what it's real name is) last year at Tatton Park Flower Show. It was just a small specimen then and I thought the harsh winter had seen it off. Oh no ... it has spread like wildfire, popping up everywhere in the garden! So I took some cuttings for my basket display. It looks like a wild haired hippy. The basket is from a Japanese department store and as I remember quite reasonably priced giving that it looks handmade. It's made from bamboo strips. Seen in the left hand corner of the picture is an original tile by the infamous Liz Scrine. It has a delicate wallpaper pattern and works well in this compostion.

My brand new kitchen is very nearly complete (woohoo!) so now it's time to rediscover some of my Japanese ceramics. First up is the 'Grand Vert' collection of porcelain made by Noritake. I have the tea set and side plate set. As you can see, the fern design is beautifully simple and effective. It's so lovely.

I remember spending hours (or what felt like hours to my very patient friend Tomoko) choosing whether to buy the side plates or bowl set to go with the tea set. I think I would have bought the whole collection if I wasn't worried about getting it all back home! Now, I can finally use them - 10 years later. Only for special occasions though.

'The Noritake of today grew out of a trading company that was originally established by the Morimura Brothers in New York in 1876. This trading company imported chinaware, curios, paper lanterns and other gift items. In 1904, the forerunner of the Noritake Company was established in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The goal of this first factory was to create western style dinnerware for export. It took until 1914, however, to create the first porcelain dinnerware plate that was suitable for export' (excerpt from Noritake's website).

I've recently changed the exhibit in the 'smallest gallery in the world'. It is a beautiful tea bowl by Matthew Blakely. It's handthrown reduction fired porcelain. I love the way the drips are caught in motion. Take a look!

Green Tatton - it was great to walk around the beautiful gardens and breathe the fresh air.

The Japanese garden is very pretty but it's a shame that you can't actually walk around within it. Even though the garden was made by 'Japanese workmen' it still feels like an English version of a tea garden.

And onto the Biennial. It's a great idea to have site specific contemporary art in such a beautiful and interesting place. However, I must confess that I was disappointed as I walked around some of the works situated in the gardens. I feel some of these artists are very good at writing proposals and subsequently 'talking the talk' but they lack the talent or time to carry their ideas through to an accomplished end that is interesting for the viewer. I always look for skill in making as well as the idea that is being conveyed. However, some artists aren't interested in the making just the concept. Unfortunately, a lot of the garden pieces weren't open or in use as this is reserved for the weekends only! I feel that if some of them were open or in use then it wouldn't have altered my opinion of it.

There were two pieces of note in the house though. Kate MccGwire's 'Evacuate'. This is a giant pheasant like creature taking over the kitchen. It was beautifully made from thousands of locally sourced feathers and created a surreal experience. It reminds me of a recurring dream I used to have as a child - continuously expanding worms! I feel the piece is a wildfowl assault on years of abuse by the aristocracy which of course has parallels.

The other piece is Helen Maurer's 'Light Landing'. Although this piece wasn't working, I could imagine that it would look quite interesting. Glass droplets hanging in a hall that when lit would evoke images of parachutes and WWII. If you ever wondered what happened to the chandeliers from Manchester airport...........

Return of the penguins

Here are a couple of images of the penguin pieces I am working on (see 29th March 2010 post for the beginnings). Lately, I've been having problems with cracking (there's always something in ceramics!) but I fired these pieces to see how the glaze works. I used my original aqua glaze with a glossy opaque white glaze. The glazes work well together and there seems to be no problems when they blend into each other. Also, I'm not used to glazing such awkward shapes so it was good to practise glazing them. The pieces need further development in particular the scale. I have some interesting ideas to work on.

Exhibitions of note

I've been to see two interesting exhibitions this week. The first, at Laing Art Gallery, was showing ukiyo or 'floating world' prints. Alongside the woodblock prints depicting life at that time were lacquerware boxes. I am fascinated by these beautiful, intricate and well made objects. There are numerous types of boxes for picnics, writing and incense etc. They all have a ceremonial quality and ritual aspect to them. I am currently researching this area for my ceramic work.

The second exhibition about the life and work of Edward Hughes was intriguing, in particular his training in Japan.

Japanese Wave at Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle

Highlights from Laing's collection of Japanese prints and artefacts will be on show in a new exhibition called Japanese Wave. It will be the first time many of the items have been on show to the public for almost a decade.

The exhibition focuses on Japanese imagery from the 19th century and includes depictions of geisha, Japanese theatre and landscape.

As well as iconic images such as printmaker Hokusai's Under the Wave, off Kanagawa, the exhibition includes many prints which give an insight into life in 19th century Japan. Images of geisha are on show as well as depictions of Kabuki theatre, alongside decorative artefacts reflecting the themes seen in the prints such as combs, mirrors and fans designed for use by fashionable Japanese ladies of the day.

Edward Hughes (October 16, 1953 - March 31, 2006) was one of Britain's very finest potters. Sometimes called "one of studio pottery's best kept secrets" his work was extremely popular in Japan, his life's work was dedicated to making pots for others to use and he spoke about this with a passion.

This is a retrospective exhibition of Hughes' work and includes examples of his work from all periods, from his formative years when studying pottery through to the mature work made in his studios in Japan and Cumbria. The work shown shows his mastery of all aspects of the ceramicists art.

A friend gave me this log. I really like it's gnarled quality and the way it looks alive. It looks as if the growing rings around the little branches are pulsating as I look at it.

Two wonders of creativity

If you get the chance watch 'I'm here'. It's 30min short film by Spike Jonze and is only available to watch online. It's very touching, quirky and original - as you would expect from Spike.

Also check out the UK's pavilion as part of the Shangai World Expo. It's designed by Thomas Heatherwick. The huge six storey high object is formed from slender transparent rods, which extend from the structure and quiver in the breeze. During the day, the rods draw in the daylight to illuminate the interior. At night, light sources at the interior end of each rod allow the whole structure to glow. Inside the giant dandelion-esque object there is a 'seed cathedral' with each of the rods holding a single seed. The pavilion sits on what looks like an massive piece of crumpled paper that once wrapped the biodiverse object.

It is so still and quiet that you could walk past her door without noticing Beverley sitting there, patiently bringing a lump of clay to life between her hands on the spinning potter’s wheel. Her skill is fascinating and, looking around the
studio, it is obvious that here is someone who knows her craft and absolutely enjoys her work. The shelves are full of her pottery, a blur of shape and texture with lots of lovely pastels. Somehow the colours make you think of winter snows and spring sunshine.

Beverley, who has lived in Trinity for about four years, says that she enjoys working at ‘The Mill’ because “There are like minded creative people there who have helped and inspired me to follow a creative way of life.” '

Retrospective lost and found?

Last year I went to Bournemouth for the first time. I really liked it. The Jurassic Coast is fantastic and beautiful. I love being by the sea. Inspired by the landsape I hid some of my aqua cups (I didn't leave any on the beach though). Checking their positions the next day, they had all been found - I wonder where they are now? If you found one then please let me know how they are doing.

Barcelona - isn't it just lovely!

I've just spent a few days in Barcelona. It is so lovely. It must be one of my favourite cities - great architecture and design, Gaudi, Miro, tapas, and a beach! I enjoyed walking around and spotting fantastic facades with their ornate plasterwork, stained glass windows and verandahs. It must be a real joy coming home if you live in one of these beautiful townhouses. I managed to take a peek inside one of these wonderful buildings. It was a furniture shop named 'Cubina'. In the window it had room sets segmented by old style boardroom type doors and walls. I really liked the way they had incorporated the contemporary pieces with the sophisticated original style of the place.

The above images are from the inside of the Sagrada Familia. Gaudi was inspired by nature and the cathedral illustrates this beautifully. You can see the huge stone trees that support the golden canopy have elliptical scars that mimic how a tree protects itself after a branch has been cut off. The circular staircase is enveloped in a honeycomb shell as it winds it's way skyward.

New Gadget

I've bought a gadget that will scan my mountains of negatives (old school photos) and transfer them into digital files. I have a feeling that this could be a lifetime's work! I've posted two images of my days in Japan but they seem to be rather soft focus and not as good as the originals. Perhaps I'm expecting too much of the machine or probably more likely I don't know how to use it properly. The photos by the way were taken in Daizaifu during autumn. The autumnal foilage was spectacular. The figures guarding the shrine had newly knitted hats to keep them warm and protect them.

New work - penguins

I've had a productive and enjoyable weekend working on my penguin series. On Saturday I threw some thick porcelain bases and then altered or added on different landscapes from my imagination. The images shown here are quite geographical - mountainous, lakeside and volcanic. You can see elements of the Giant's Causeway on the first image. I intend to dry these pieces slowly then fire and glaze them. The glaze will be a high gloss white and my own special aqua glaze. When everything has gone to plan (! - it could be a long and painful process until I'm happy with the results) then the penguins will arrive and investigate their new surroundings. New Ceramic Course

I've started running ceramic courses from my studio at Islington Mill, Salford. These courses are an introduction to ceramic techniques and cover hand building and throwing. The course has a maximum of two people and are held at weekends from 10-4pm. I'm enjoying these courses as it allows me rediscover techniques that I've used in the past and to share my facilities and ceramic knowledge.

The smallest gallery in the world?

Apologies for my late post. I have tried to direct my website mail through Outlook Express which sounded really easy and beneficial. Alas no, my messages are going somewhere but it's a secret place that I'm not allowed to know about! Aargh!!!! Three days trying to find out but I'm still none the wiser.

Anyway, back to the post. I have an acrylic box in my living room where I display items that I've collected on my travels and such like. Currently showing in the box are some glass cups and a decanter from the Ultima Thule series by Tapio Wirkkala. Is this box the smallest gallery in the world? I really like the work of Tapio. He had a great understanding of materials and design.
